Submissions to Unseen Japan

If you resonate with Unseen Japan’s mission of introducing the English speaking world to modern and historical Japan, we’d love you to write for us! UJ pays for high-quality, approved submissions. (Reciprocal link relationships are also available for authors with their own Web sites.)

UJ primarily publishes from writers who know Japanese to an upper intermediate/advanced level (Japanese Language Proficiency Test N2 or better), and who are comfortable translating selected passages from original Japanese sources. This does NOT mean you need to be a professional translator – dabblers are welcome! We will occasionally make an exception to this rule for writers with unique, first-hand experience of Japan with compelling article pitches.

We are also occasionally looking for writers of short news articles. Please inquire as to availability.

Submitting an Idea

First, read our site and get an idea of the kind of thing we’re looking for. We enjoy essays in excess of 1,500 words that delve into some aspects of Japanese society, culture, or history. We are particularly interested in social justice movements (anti-hate/anti-racism, LGBT, feminism, minority rights, indigenous rights), business (particularly technology and cashless technologies), history, and historic women of Japan.

When you’re ready to pitch, use the form below to send us a message with the following information:

  • Your background (writing experience, Japanese language level including any professional degrees or certifications)
  • Your idea (What do you want to write about? How does it fit Unseen Japan’s mission?)
  • Links to one or more writing examples
  • If you have a draft article you want to propose, attach it using the form below.

We look forward to working with you!
